Preston and Garstang Turnpike Trust Milestone at Broughton

The Preston and Garstang Turnpike Trust Milestones are from the mid to later 18th century, and were erected by Preston and Garstang Turnpike Trust.  They consist of a convex triangular stone circa 1 metre high, with rounded top and a recessed panel on each of the two sides to the road.  They are lettered in cursive script.

The Preston and Garstang Turnpike Trust was established 1751.  There are now nine such milestones in unbroken sequence on the route from Fulwood to Garstang.

The one in Broughton, is now probably considered to be in Fulwood.  The cursive script indicates the following:

"To Garstang 7¾ Miles" & "To Preston 3 Miles" with "BROUGHTON" on the base beneath the panels.

The nearest milestone to Preston town centre would have been...

Now the milestone at Fulwood that is positioned outside the Harris ....  is now the closest one to town and is the start of the unbroken sequence of nine such milestones heading north towards Lancaster.

Toll Bar Cottage

The Toll Bar Cottage is a former Tollhouse in Broughton.  It is now used as a café. It was officially opened by the Mayor of Preston on Sunday 3rd October, 2021.  He was treated to coffee and a slice of cake. The Toll Bar Cottage Café in now serves as a Community Hub.  It has a meeting room for families, groups, which is run by the centre manager and team of volunteers in the community.

If look on the side of the building, which was still on the old route of the A6 before the Broughton bypass was created, you can see a sign that lists the past toll charges.
